Latvia’s Security Barometer: 1/2025 (mid-January to mid-April 2025)

During the first quarter of 2025 the global security and economic systems have been thrown into turmoil by the vigorous actions of President Trump and his administration. At this stage it is difficult to tell what effect this will have on Latvian, regional and global security, even in the short to medium term. What has become clear to many US allies is that the unconditional trust in US support which they have placed in America for much of the past 80 years can no longer be taken for granted. Whether a realization by Europeans that we must now look to our own security will balance the US expected withdrawal from Europe has yet to be seen. Either way, we cannot say that we were not warned!
