Latvia’s Security Barometer: 2/2026 (mid-April to mid-June 2026)

Latvia got a new government, which will be in power until the next parliament votes in another one following the October 3 elections. The fall of the government was facilitated by multiple drone incursions in Latvia, which rattled society. Belarus increased its pressure with continuing weaponization of migration on the border with Latvia. The NATO Ankara Summit passed off successfully despite fears that President Trump might prioritize his anger over lack of Allied support in his war in Iran. The development of mid-range and jet-powered drones has heralded major changes in the war in Ukraine. Poland and others have warned of potential spill-over into the “front-line states”. The US has still not solved its problems with Iran, which has now realized the power of its ability to block the Strait of Hormuz.
